Oracle Business Accelerators for Oracle E-Business Suite

Initially, when I started getting myself certified with Oracle Business Accelerator (OBA) in June 2007, I had not thought much of its practical use in implementation. I only knew that it is a tool which will help companies and consultants to rapidly implement and simplify setup process for business to reach go-live quickly. I was most interested in this but it had more to offer.

Now, Oracle Business Accelerator is much talked about in industry and consulting community.

One should not be surprised if this certification be made mandatory for Oracle Apps Consultants in future.

Let’s see what OBA is by answering few questions.

What is Oracle Business Accelerator?

As quoted by Oracle “Oracle Accelerate delivers a complete set of applications, rapid implementation tools, and an industry-leading partner ecosystem, allowing companies to maximize their limited budgets and achieve unlimited possibilities.”

Making it simpler, it is easy-to-use tool for implementation of Oracle E-Business Suite faster with initial configuration setup. One can simulate end-to-end business flow with customer specific business transaction data and setup. In no time customer can start testing the system with their data and also reach Pilot and CRP in very short time

Base line is that OBA rapidly configure E-Business suite Instance

You can read more in FAQ at Metalink with Doc. Id: 419677.1

How do the Accelerators work?

Accelerator has a set of questions related to customers business and industry, on basis of which it configures customers system.

After configuration the data generated is loaded onto an Oracle instance to create the setups

This process takes no time and its very fast and automated.

How will customer benefit?

Oracle quotes ‘Customer Demands- We have no margin of error. Our limited resources are focused on running the business. We cannot financially absorb a lengthy, resource intensive or expensive implementation’

Traditional implementations takes long time for customers to get the look and feel of its ‘to-be’ system with own data. Till then they were only able to ‘surf’ Vision instance.

The process of System Study, Requirement capturing, Data gathering for Test Instance and testing takes approximately 4-6 months. As Oracle quotes, it takes 90 to 180 days to reach the testing phase in Test Instance but with Oracle Accelerators, it will take 7-14 days for this phase.

OBA will create a vanilla setup with customers own data and they will able to see their system in no time.

What is Oracle Accelerator Program ?

In October 2006, Oracle launched its Oracle Accelerate Program . It has three levels.

LEVEL 1 BROWSE provides:

  • Demonstrate the Accelerator Configuration Tool
  • Access collateral and scoping information
  • Browse sample assets in all Accelerator solutions
  • Navigate the Accelerator Configuration Tool

LEVEL 2 BROWSE provides:

  • All of the features of LEVEL 1 BROWSE plus
  • Access to additional assets used in the implementation and bid process for ALL industries

LEVEL 3 PROJECT WORKSPACE provides:

  • All of the features of LEVEL 2 BROWSE plus
  • Access to Flow Scripts in the requested industry
  • Eligibility for a Project Workspace

Assessment:

It has an overview session which is very well designed with Audio/Video slide presentation in media player.

On successful completion of the Oracle Business Accelerators for Oracle E-Business Suit Accelerators Overview Course an assessment exam can be taken which gives you access to the Accelerators Online Portal

Exam time? Yes, you are right.

It has total 20 questions .The cut-off for passing is 95%, isn’t it too much? But this may be right for being OBA certified.

I managed to pass it at first attempt but I recommend anyone taking it to simple notes and walk through the overview session slowly by setting speed of slide and speech.

Instant Client

Avoid installing Oracle Client to access database-Instant Client

I had faced many challenges while installing Oracle Client on my new laptop with Windows Vista Home Premium as I believe there are some critical files not bundled with this pack. I effortlessly installed Oracle client on Vista Ultimate. But now you can even avoid installing client to access database. Learn how. I made a habit of documenting this kind of ‘problems WITH solution ‘ and it became a our blog post .

What is Instant Client?

Oracle introduced ‘Instant Client’ as an alternative to install Oracle client to run your applications. Benefit, less disk space used and very important is to avoid step by step client installation for creating ORACLE_HOME

Installation Steps:

1. Download the appropriate Instant Client packages for your platform. All installations REQUIRE the Basic or Basic Lite package.

2. Unzip the packages into a single directory such as “instantclient_10_2 ".

3. Set the library loading path in your environment to the directory " instantclient_10_2 " (or Step 2 Directory)

4. Now that you are in the instantclient_10_2 directory you will need to set up some environment variables to be able to run SQL Plus

export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=

export TNS_ADMIN=.

export ORACLE_HOME=.

5. Now you will need to create of copy a tnsnames.ora file into your current directory

6. To connect your database, run this command ./sqlplus username/password@databasename

Note: SIDNAME is database name in your TNSNAMES.ora

Download Instant Client

Problem I faced: Unable to install Oracle Client on your PC having Windows Vista Home Premium?

Steps:

1. Download the appropriate Instant Client packages for your platform i.e. Instant Client Package - Basic/Basic Lite (OCI,DLL files) e.g. instantclient-basic-win32-11.1.0.6.0.zip for Windows

2. Unzip the package . It will be unzipped as “ instantclient_10_2”. I recommend to place this in you C:/ Directory

3. Run Setup for Oracle Client. Restart on Prompt. Done. Enjoy

4. Or

5. Install SQL Developer. Download from http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/products/sql/index.html

Happy Connecting!!
